Weekend Picks [AUDIO]
Sorry… after being productive earlier in the day, I got a little sidetracked. Thanks NBA playoffs on TNT!
Lots of good reading material in this week’s HiLife… other than watching BJ Penn fight this weekend on pay-per-view, the event I’m most looking forward to is Beatrix*JAR’s (pictured) performance tomorrow night at the ARTS at Mark’s Garage.
You can read more about the Minneapolis-based duo here; check out Beatrix*JAR’s MySpace page to listen to some music. They’ll also take part in an interactive workshop at Ong King on Sunday.
Other options for Memorial Day weekend (and next week) include:
>> Today through Sunday: The 19th Annual Rainbow Film Festival
>> Saturday: Kathy Griffin at the Blaisdell Concert Hall
>> Tuesday: Earth, Wind and Fire at the Blaisdell Arena
“In the Mix” is full of picks for tonight, tomorrow and Sunday, and also includes details about the “Mega 80’s Music Festival” at Aloha Tower Marketplace on June 14. Take a look at Nightcrawlers for a comprehensive list of clubs and bars, or Crawlspace for info about “Jazz and Gumbo” and the 12th annual “DJs Against AIDS” fundraiser.
And finally, a little treat for you on this Friday afternoon.
The Brothers Cazimero have a new album, “Destiny,” out this week. I had a nice conversation with Leah Bernstein, president of the Mountain Apple Company (the label that released the album), earlier today, and she mentioned that these two living legends of the Hawaiian music community are having a hard time getting radio airplay in 2008.
So, it’s time to take advantage of my Web 2.0 skills (yeah right) and get viral with it.
This is my favorite song off the album, and it’s actually a cover. Bu La’ia, I see you homie!
Remember to support local artists; buy it, don’t burn it!
