New Year’s Eve on the cheap

Fireworks over Waikiki. (LeoP123 photo)
So here we are. The final day of 2008.
Many people will spend time with family this evening, playing with fireworks and talking story. Others will head for the best vantage point possible in order to watch various fireworks displays scheduled around Oahu.
And judging by the number of choices in last week’s HiLife, lots of folks will be out partying like rock stars.
In case you missed it, the Star-Bulletin’s New Year’s Eve calendar is here, nightclub listings are here and additional picks are available in Nightcrawlers.
But say $20 or $30 (or more) is just too much to spend on tickets to a party or cover at a nightclub this New Year’s Eve.
After the jump, I’ve got a few more options for tonight with absolutely no charge to get in – all you have to do is spend money on drinks!
CW’s Night Club
227 Lewers St.
921-9000
Doors open at 8 p.m. tonight on the ground floor of the Wyndham Vacation Resort. DJ Sir Style will be on the decks spinning a mix of ’80s, ’90s and current mainstream hits, with $3 drink specials and a 4 a.m. last call. Valet parking is $6 with validation.
Irish Rose Saloon
478 Ena Rd.
947-3414
A few blocks up Kalakaua in the mauka direction, local rockers the Piranha Brothers play tonight from 9 p.m. to 1:30 a.m.
Kelley O’Neil’s
311 Lewers St.
926-1777
Local funk band Soulution will play multiple sets between 9 p.m. and 3:30 a.m.
Mercury Bar
1154 Fort Street Mall
537-3080
Head to the bar tucked away on Chaplain Lane for an intimate evening with DJ Kitty Chow and friends. The fun starts at 9 p.m. tonight, although the bar should be open long before then.
NextDoor
43 N. Hotel St.
548-6398
After being closed for months to undergo renovations and re-secure a valid liquor license, it appears NextDoor is set to make a big splash into 2009.
DJ Delve1 and the Nocturnal Sound Krew’s DJ Jami will be on the decks; doors open at 9 p.m. and you can get in free if you look closely at the club’s new site.
O’Toole’s Irish Pub
902 Nuuanu Ave.
536-4138
One of the cheapest options in Chinatown for New Year’s Eve is O’Toole’s with Doolin’ Rakes. They’ll play sets from 9 p.m. to 1:30 a.m. tonight.
***
One more important note for tonight: Shwayze will NOT be in Honolulu to headline New Year’s Eve at Pipeline Cafe. However, this 18-and-over party will go on with performances by Krystilez and Creed Chameleon with DJ Packo. No word if the Blue Scholars will still be a part of the show.
That’s it for me… Hauoli Makahiki Hou!

Okay, I’ve gotten a few updates since this entry was posted:
1) The Blue Scholars will NOT be at Pipeline tonight. BAMP Project has rescheduled their appearance to Friday at NextDoor. Doors open at 10 p.m. that night, and a $10 cover will be in effect.
2) DJ Kee let me know that Bar 35 is not charging cover tonight. He’ll be there on the decks to help Chinatown ring in the New Year.
3) Just down Hotel Street at the Loft, cover is $5 for the NYE edition of their weekly ’80s party. Wear ’80s attire, and you get in for free.
