Hawaiian Ryan hits the road

One of the newest must-reads in my RSS reader is “Choose Our Own Adventure” by Ryan “Hawaiian Ryan” Matsumoto and Jennifer “Jenn Meleana” Hee.
In my opinion, their new travel blog contains two key ingredients necessary for success: Personality and Content.

There’s the happy couple. Aren’t they cute?
Anyway, back to the key ingredients.
Personality. There are a lot of boring people out there on the Internet, plain and simple.
But Matsumoto and Hee are FAR from boring. I’ve known Matsumoto personally since I got into radio eight years ago, after being a fan of his work with the Three Local Boyz.
After stints at local radio stations KQMQ and KXME (now KPHW), he gave television a try in 2005 as the producer/host of “Hawaii Love Stories” on OC-16. Then in 2006, he moved to Philadelphia to co-host a morning drive radio show with fellow Hawaii personality Sam “Sam the Man” Ambrose.
Ambrose didn’t last the year, and moved back to Honolulu to do mornings at his old station, 102.7 Da Bomb. Matsumoto, on the other hand, remained in Philly until a few months ago, when he was informed his services were no longer needed.
I know Hee from her days at Iolani, where she was two years behind me during my own high school career. She graduated in 1997, and continued on to college at Harvard University before spending time as a Peace Corps volunteer.
Hee has also contributed numerous times to the Star-Bulletin over the past decade, usually via the newspaper’s “The Goddess Speaks” feature. She started dating Matsumoto last year.
See? Aren’t they interesting?
And not only are they interesting, but both of them can WRITE, too.
Which leads us to the second ingredient: Content.
Matsumoto and Hee have been on the road since the beginning of November, and they consistently make me laugh out loud with their descriptions of traveling, visiting with relatives and simply interacting with each other.
I’m also a little jealous, because roaming around the mainland U.S. without a schedule is something I’ve always dreamed of doing.
In my perfect world, I’d have a few months during the summer to explore and take in as many Major League Baseball games as I could afford to attend.
But these two former Hawaii residents (and people I know!) aren’t just dreaming about it – they’re doing it.
I’m proud of them. Now go read their blog!

samoan sized shakas to Jason for writing about our writing. Being in between jobs makes you obsessive about 1 of 2 things:
1. getting another job
2. never getting another job
jason has encouraged us to at least explore the latter.
and for that, i love him like only men can love each other without it being awkward.
cant wait til hawaii becomes my permanent adventure!
