Celebrate Makana’s birthday on Thursday at RumFire
If you haven’t yet paid a visit to RumFire at the Sheraton Waikiki, tomorrow is a great time to dodge the tourists and enjoy multi-million dollar views.
Local guitar virtuoso Makana continues with his regular Thursday residency this week, but the party will definitely reach another level as he celebrates both his birthday and the launch of a new non-profit organization that he founded to help support music education in Hawaii’s schools.
I Ho’ili Kamali’i (roughly translated as “Leaving a Legacy for the Children of the Land”) is a new project that aims to bring “unique and influential music experiences into schools.”
Money raised during tomorrow’s fundraiser will be used to pay for classroom sessions with musicians who will “convey a sense of cultural awareness and inspire in the children a genuine appreciation for the music of Hawaii.”
If you just want to enjoy the music (and RumFire’s happy hour prices), get there at 5 p.m. to watch Makana in action, along with a few special guests. A DJ will spin music once his set is pau around 8:30 p.m.
Suggested donation for this one is $20 at the door, but keep in mind that a donation of $300 or more can completely fund a classroom session. Make checks payable to The Forward Foundation; all donations of more than $50 are tax-deductible.
Happy Birthday Makana!
