Catching up with Gerard Elmore

Friday, October 3rd, 2008

When I first met Gerard Elmore about five years ago, it was easy to see how ambitious he was.

Not only did he enjoy calling the shots from behind a camera – Elmore also established himself as an actor and stand-up comedian, building relationships within the local arts community and gaining valuable experience.

In 2006, he left for the mainland to take a job with NASCAR. The year he spent filming and producing online videos for the racing organization was eye-opening, he said, and only reinforced his desire to return home.

Nearly three years later, Elmore is back and employed as a commercial director at Shooters Film Production. But the really big news is that he was selected to direct and produce this year’s official trailer for the Louis Vuitton Hawaii International Film Festival.

“It’s a sense of accomplishment,” Elmore said of his feelings as the trailer, starring Jason Scott Lee and Kelly Hu, made its debut Monday at Dole Cannery. “We worked really hard and have paid a lot of dues.”

Along with Lee and Hu, Elmore enlisted the help of Mat Catingub and the Honolulu Symphony on the trailer’s soundtrack, a cover of the Depeche Mode song “Dreaming of Me.” Paula Fuga contributed vocals on the track.

Why pull out all the stops for a gig that pays absolutely nothing?

“All the filmmakers who come (to LVHIFF) are going to see it,” he said. “So we went back through all the trailers (and asked ourselves), ‘What can we do differently?’”

And keep an eye out for Elmore’s movie, “All For Melissa,” on the shelves at Wal-Mart and Best Buy (and Circuit City on the mainland) next month. Elmore disclosed that Echo Bridge Entertainment signed a distribution deal to sell DVDs both locally and on the mainland.

The Hell Caminos come home

After three months of relentless touring through 18 states, local rockabilly band The Hell Caminos return to Honolulu for a few weeks in November.

“(The) West Coast, the South, East Coast, he Midwest … it was long,” said Hell Caminos bassist Michael Camino. “Half of us stayed in LA for the last few months, but we’re all coming back for (the) Hawaii (shows).”

The band departed for the mainland last year after a farewell party at Anna Bannana’s that doubled as a fundraiser for the move. They returned to the islands to release their second full-length album, “Lust,” in March, before heading back out for their latest tour.

“We’ve missed playing on Oahu,” Camino said. “It’s gonna be nice to play in our backyard (for) people that supported us the last 4 years.”

Here are the details about The Hell Caminos’ homecoming:

“The Return of The Hell Caminos: PUNKS VS PSYCHOS” (with The 86 List, White Rose (Maui), Guttercats and special appearances by Pacific Roller Derby and Cherry Blossom Cabaret)
When: 9 p.m. Nov. 7th
Where: Anna Bananas
Cover: $10 (all ages)

Can’t make it on the 7th? The band will return to Anna’s on Nov. 9 and play at the Mercury Bar on Nov. 14. Cherry Blossom Cabaret will join them for the Chinatown gig.

Mary J. Blige coming to Honolulu in October

Friday, September 5th, 2008

By Jason Genegabus

I’ve got to get ready to head down to the Stan Sheriff Center to help Star-Bulletin sports reporter Cindy Luis run a live blog during tonight’s UH Wahine Volleyball game against Wyoming, but I wanted to get this posted.

While I haven’t received confirmation from the mainland-based promoters yet, at least one local radio station has announced that Mary J. Blige is coming to Hawaii next month. She’s scheduled to perform at the Blaisdell Arena on Oct. 24.

No word on ticket prices either, although I’m told you can buy them at all Ticketmaster outlets starting on Monday at 10 a.m.

Blige is currently touring the mainland U.S. with R&B singer Robin Thicke, but it appears he won’t be making an appearance here. My guess is that Dave Young, one of the artists signed to Blige’s Matriarch Records, will open the night.

More on this when I hear back from the promoters.

Pipeline Cafe sold

Multiple sources confirmed last night that an agreement has been reached to sell Kakaako nightclub Pipeline Cafe.

The deal between Pipeline principal owner Chip Jewitt and local retailer and event promoter Greg Azus ends months of speculation after word got out that the club was on the market.

Since my deadline for “In the Mix” falls early in the week, tomorrow’s column (or today’s, if you subscribe to the Star-Bulletin’s afternoon print edition) has additional info about what was, at the time, a pending transaction.

More details on this breaking story once I can get a hold of the parties involved.

***

UPDATE (9/4/08): I was able to get Greg Azus on the phone a few hours ago, and he confirmed the deal is done. Check out “In the Mix” this week for more details, or look in tomorrow’s Business section of the newspaper for a story about the sale.

***

UPDATE #2 (9/5/08): Okay, here are the items in today’s Star-Bulletin. My column and the story I wrote for our Business section.

Justin Nozuka at Pipeline Friday, not Sunday…

Thursday, August 28th, 2008

I don’t know what I was thinking when I signed off on my column this week. That sucker got checked at least five times, but I missed something.

The press release I got plainly states that Justin Nozuka will play at Pipeline Cafe on Friday, with local boys Go Jimmy Go as the opening act.

But noooooo… I go and write that he’s playing there on Sunday.

That’s wrong. Wrong, wrong, wrong. (Anyone else remember that commercial with the doctor? Or was it a dentist?)

Anyway. Doors open at 6 p.m. and it’s an all-ages show. Should be a good one, too.

Just don’t go on Sunday. It’s FRIDAY.

E kala mai.
