Band Camp V [PICS]
Didn’t get a chance to check out yesterday’s “Band Camp V” at the Waikiki Shell?
The Star-Bulletin had it on lock, and now you get to see what happened.
Despite a slight mix-up at the gate (which kept us from seeing all of Madina Lake’s opening set), I was in the building with staff photographer Richard Walker. Here’s a glimpse of what went down during the show:
After waiting outside, we were given lawn tickets and told to use our press badges for better access. Luckily, Madina Lake was still performing, so Richard was able to get a picture of the band in action.
Surprisingly, there were a lot of fans already at the Shell. I guess when you’re young, you can tolerate the heat a little better if it means seeing your favorite band perform live:
The Plain White T’s were up next. While some of the band members actually wore white T-shirts, lead singer Tom Higgenson didn’t:
It was so hot at the Shell, Richard and I had to retreat to a shady spot under some trees about halfway through each of the first two bands’ sets.
But we noticed early on that there were a lot of different people at “Band Camp.” Some, like Felicia Chaves, brought their kids along to enjoy the music. That’s Chaves’ daughter, Breygan, on the shoulders of Nina Bowater:
Star 101.9’s Fernando “The Love Machine” Pacheco decided to dress in theme this year.
He also decided to shun some of the more basic curse words his co-workers were using on stage in favor of a more colorful one of his own:
As the sun started to go down, business began to pick up. It was kind of obvious that Madina Lake and the Plain White T’s were the opening acts, especially when Yellowcard got on stage and started tearing things up.
That’s Sean Mackin in the middle, rocking out on the violin. Sure, he looks a little silly with that thing on his shoulder, but it adds a dimension of sound to the band that sets them apart from everyone else:
As the concert went on, it seemed the wait between acts got longer and longer.
Eventually, the star of the show (get it? STAR of the show?) strolled out and the Shell went nuts:
It was instantly obvious that Matisyahu had the crowd in the palm of his hand. But he didn’t waste any time with small talk, letting his music do all the talking instead:
Did I mention he was also a DANCING MACHINE:
This is my favorite picture. Richard was posted up near the stage at the beginning of Matisyahu’s set, and captured his first walk out onto the platform that brought him a little closer to the crowd at the Shell:
All in all, it was a pretty good show. These people seemed to be enjoying themselves:
