“Huna Aloha: A Retrospective of Aloha Shirts and Swimwear” took place at the Ramsay Museum as part of last week’s F.A.C.E. of Nuuanu/Honolulu Fashion Week in Chinatown.

Presented by the UH Costume Collection and UH Apparel Design and Merchandising Program, the event also served as the debut of Hawaii Fashion Incubator.

Along with all the old clothes on display, author Dale Hope was on hand to talk story with attendees. He’s the author of “The Aloha Shirt: Spirit of the Islands.”

NoMasterBacks - “New Rules” [VIDEO]

Sunday, October 14th, 2007

By Jason Genegabus

From what I’ve heard on their MySpace page, the boys from NoMasterBacks are doing it big with their latest album, “At Your Door.”

Released earlier this summer, the 14-track effort features production by an all-star lineup of local producers, including Kavet the Catalyst, Sentr1c and Race Skelton.

Well.Being, Wade and Temper T also scored on the video for “New Rules” (above) by securing the services of director Ajax Starglider. I’m feeling the concept on this one, and using Goldfish (at least that’s where I think they shot the video) as the backdrop worked out great.

You can pick up the album at Borders, Wal-Mart, K-Mart, TooGruvz, Prototype and online via Apple’s iTunes Music Store.

New Owner for Ocean Club Space Announced

Friday, October 12th, 2007

By Jason Genegabus

Elizabeth Hata Watanabe, owner of the O Lounge on Kapiolani Boulevard, has signed a lease to open a new nightclub in the space that formerly belonged to the Ocean Club at Restaurant Row.

Watanabe had been in discussions to open a nightclub in the former Jose’s Mexican Restaurant space in the complex. No word if she’s still pursuing that location as well.

More information on this as it becomes available… my Star-Bulletin colleague Erika Engle will also have something about the announcement in tomorrow’s edition of the Star-Bulletin.

Gregory Issacs Coming to Honolulu

Thursday, October 11th, 2007

By Jason Genegabus

gregory_issacs.jpg

I hope the third time’s the charm for DIG Lifestyles and Echelon Entertainment.

They were the promoters who announced Nas’ now-postponed concert at Pipeline Cafe. After that show got pushed back, they regrouped and said that Talib Kweli would take the date.

Now, with no explanation, a new flyer has surfaced. Forget hip-hop; now Gregory Issacs (pictured) is scheduled to appear at the club on Oct. 27 with a live backing band.

Doors open at 9:30 p.m. for the 18-and-over show; pre-sale tickets are $30 and are available at Sera’s Haleiwa, Jelly’s, DIG Lifestyles and Pipeline. You can also order pre-sale tickets here.

Keep Your Friends Close, Your Competition Closer

Friday, October 5th, 2007

If you read today’s “In the Mix,” you might have seen a mention about “The Playground,” a 21-and-over Friday weekly at the W Honolulu.

Didn’t read my column yet? Click the link above and come back when you’re done reading.

Ready? Okay.

It turns out there’s a lot more behind-the-scenes stuff going on in Clubland than people are aware of.

When the Architechs’ Blaise Sato (pictured) decided to team up with Island Fire Productions and Tantriq at the W, it basically shelved another party elsewhere in Waikiki.
